The Difference Between Physical & Chemical Sunscreen

Keep reading to learn more about the difference between physical sunscreen and chemical sunscreen. Here at Serenity Aesthetics & Wellness, we believe that not all sunscreens are created equal. While any sunscreen is better than no sunscreen, it is important to use SPF that will give you long lasting protection such as one with SPF 30 or higher while also protecting your specific skin tone from conditions that stem from sun damage such as hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone. Clients at our office often inquire about the difference between chemical and physical sunscreens. The effectiveness of each is also inquired about as well. In this blog, we will cover all things pertaining to physical and chemical sunscreen. In addition we will discuss our office favorites!

What is Chemical Sunscreen and How Does It Work?

Chemical sunscreen works by absorbing into the skin. It often contains active ingredients like oxybenzone, dioxybenzone, avobenzone, octocrylene, homosalate, and octinoxate. Chemical Sunscreens work by absorbing UV Rays into the skin converting them into heat and then releasing them from the body. Because this sunscreen is absorbed into the skin, it may cause skin irritation, especially in those with sensitive skin.

What is Physical Sunscreen and How Does It Work?

Physical or Mineral sunscreen works by forming a barrier on top of the skin’s surface. Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide are the active ingredients used to formulate physical sunscreens. When physical sunscreen is applied to the skin’s surface, the barrier it creates reflects UV rays away from the skin. This is a more ideal method for darker skin tones when looking to improve or prevent hyperpigmentation. There is less chance of irritation when using a physical sunscreen.
