The Difference Between Light and Medium Depth Peels
Keep reading to learn the difference between light and medium depth chemical peels. Chemical peels are a popular treatment for addressing a wide range of skin concerns, from dullness and fine lines to acne and hyperpigmentation. However, not all peels are created equal. At Serenity Aesthetics & Wellness, we often help clients decide between light and medium depth peels based on their goals and lifestyle.
Light Chemical Peels
Light chemical peels, also known as superficial peels, target the topmost layer of the skin. These peels typically use gentle acids like lactic acid, glycolic acid, and low percentages of TCA to exfoliate dead skin cells, brighten tone, and smooth texture. Because light peels focus on surface level concerns, there’s little to no downtime involved. Clients can expect mild flaking or dryness for a day or two, but the skin often recovers quickly. Most clients don’t peel at all after a light peel. Light peels are excellent for those with sensitive skin, first-time peel clients, and anyone looking for a monthly tune up without significant peeling. However, keep in mind that it can take a longer period of time to see improvement of certain skin concerns when targeting them with just light chemical peels.
Medium Depth Peels
Medium depth peels, on the other hand, penetrate more deeply into the dermis. These are designed to treat more significant issues like moderate acne scarring, melasma, deeper wrinkles, and stubborn hyperpigmentation. Ingredients like Retinoic acid and higher percentages of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) are often found in medium depth formulations. Because these peels affect the deeper layers of the skin, you’ll likely experience several days of peeling, redness, and tightness. The recovery time is around 7 days, but the results are more effective in a shorter period of time.
