How To Prepare For Your Chemical Peel
One of our most frequently asked questions is how to prepare for your Chemical peel.
We get it: The thought of receiving a chemical peel can be daunting, especially if you remember that dreaded Sex in the City scene where Samantha’s face nearly fell off. Thankfully at our office, Serenity Aesthetics & Wellness in Philadelphia, we provide various chemical peels, so this is an extremely rare occasion.
Chemical peels are one of the most effective ways to increase your skin’s cellular turnover. There are a variety of peels that range from light, to medium to deep. The result is smoother skin, reduction of acne and breakouts, improved hyperpigmentation, and reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. In order to make the most of your peel treatment, it’s important to prep.
How to prepare for your chemical peel:
- Prep with the products recommended by your practitioner. Some peels require prepping with retinol and hydroquinone products to reduce the risk of hyperpigmentation. It’s best to consult with your practitioner to find out what products are required for your peel prep.
- Wear sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher daily) every day
- Stop the use of Retinol one week before your peel
- Stop the use of facial exfoliants, exfoliating brushes or scrubs, peel pads, AHA products, and BHA products one week before your peel
- Avoid excessive sun exposure
- Make sure you have reviewed the list of chemical peel contraindications of who should avoid/ not get a chemical peel
Pro Tip: On the day of your peel, keep it simple. Don’t wear any makeup to your appointment. After cleansing that morning, apply moisturizer and SPF.
